Join the 13th Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup

The natural spaces of West Maui are magnificent, but wherever there are people, there's work to be done keeping everything clean and beautiful. That's why there are clean up efforts in our shared community areas. On Saturday, September 16th, International Coastal Cleanup will host the 13th Annual Lahaina Town Cleanup. Last year's effort brought 500 volunteers together to clean up the area from Puamana all the way to Mala Wharf, with terrific results. If you're here to browse for West Maui real estate listings, you're either a resident, or you're thinking about becoming one, in which case, joining the clean up effort will benefit the community and yourself as well.

The clean up effort isn't just about Lahaina Town itself. It's about helping to keep the coast clean, too. It's important to make sure we keep the beaches and the ocean clean and free from human-made debris for the health of the ecosystem, including the stunning coral reefs that make their homes along the West Maui coastline.

So far, almost 12 million people have participated in International Coastal Cleanup day around the world, and their main goal is to protect the ocean. Plastic has been especially troublesome for sea birds and sea turtles throughout the world's oceans. As Hawaii is home to endangered species in both categories, cleanup efforts here are especially important.

The day will begin at 8am after coffee and breakfast snacks from Ruth Chris Steak House. Cleanup will start at 8am and continue until noon. Afterwards, there will be a lunch provided by Pacific'O and water from Tropic Water. Volunteers will meet at Kamehameha Iki Park and then begin combing the coastline from Puamana to Mala Wharf. Stencil teams will get supplies and instructions before they head out, and they will educate the public about keeping drains clean to prevent unhealthy ocean runoff.

If you'd like to join the effort, bring a pair of gloves, and some water bottles. If you can bring litter grabbers and small nets, or even a truck to help haul the rubbish and recyclables, that would be especially appreciated.
