Innovation Award Presented to Hawaii State Department of Education

This prestigious award was earned based on several observations about Hawaii's DOE.

The commission described the department's impactful education improvement efforts, which involved a focus on college and career readiness among students. Despite how important it is, many school systems are so focused on learning the typical subjects that students are totally bewildered when they move on to the unfamiliar complexities of college life and adulthood. The Hawaii DOE has made serious strides to help ensure our state's kids are prepared for what lies ahead of them.

Other areas highlighted by the commission were teacher/education leader support throughout the state, the development of a comprehensive longitudinal data system, and investment in data literacy. All significant challenges to tackle. It's all very well and good to come up with ideas for innovating the education system, but managing to follow through and achieve success in these efforts is what set Hawaii apart. Jeremy Anderson, president of the Education Commission of the States, made the following statement about Hawaii's success.

“The state’s thoughtfully constructed policies, reforms and capacity-building programs provide teachers and education leaders with opportunities to increase the potential for both their professional success, as well as the success of their students, and also support the state in achieving its education goals.”

Maui Visitor Industry Performance in Q1 of 2017

Diving into the Maui real estate market can be exciting, challenging, and even intimidating for those whose experience is specific to the mainland. Whether you plan to use your Maui property as a full-time residence or not, you want to see values climb so that if you choose to sell in the future, you'll see a profit on your investment. This is where the economy is a vital indicator. Wherever you find a strong economy, you find rising real estate prices. For Hawaii, and Maui especially, tourism is the biggest industry. How is the tourism industry performing on Maui?

First, let's talk about statewide numbers. According to the preliminary data released by Hospitality Advisors LLC and STR Inc., Hawaii hotels pulled in $1.07 billion in room revenue in the first quarter of 2017. Revenue per available room, known as RevPAR, was $222.78 in the first quarter, and that was 6.7 percent higher than the same period last year. Statewide, occupancy was up to 81.7 and average daily rates reached $272.72. The data is expected to get some adjustments when the finalized report is released next month.

Based on the preliminary data, Maui had the highest revenue per available room, as always. That figure reached $300.93 in the first quarter, while the average daily room rate was $375.99. Maui typically has the highest room rates, which reflect a long-term strategy to provide the most exclusive, high-quality vacation experience.

Compare Maui's RevPAR of $300.93 to Oahu's at $193.16, Kauai's at $218.49 and the Big Island's at $212.59. While Maui's average daily room rate was $375.99, Oahu's was $233.39, Kauai's was $218.49, and the Big Island's was $263.53. These numbers should give you a good sense of Maui's position in terms of the visitor industry.

While some prospective Maui real estate buyers choose to take advantage of vacation rental opportunities to earn extra income, many opt for private use only. Whichever option describes your interests, the active visitor industry helps contribute to growing demand, and therefor prices, for Maui real estate over time as visitors become owners and as owners continue to purchase properties to rent out.
